It's complicated, but worth working out!

This article examines the unbroken line of Champion sires  which has resulted in modern day Champions such as Domino Flashy Lad, Nordic Chief, and Highland Dream to name a few. The aims of this article are to discover the combinations of early examples of the breed which have stamped their mark on present day exhibits, and when these combinations appeared.  Bitch lines, although just as important as dogs, are not examined here in detail.

My parents, the late Lionel F. & Jo Hemstock (Jolihem Staffords), always spoke in terms of "lines" (of decent) from Fearless Joe, The Great Bomber and  Ch. Wychbury Kimbo, and it is these lines of decent, & their perspective as breeders, that this article will examine in detail.  The distinctions between the lines of decent may not be obvious since both The Great Bomber & Ch. Wychbury Kimbo go back to Fearless Joe. For clarification I have classified these lines as lines of decent from Fearless Joe as follows:

Through Brindle Mick/Brave Nell/Fearless Joe (bitch's side of pedigree to Fearless Joe)

Through The Great Bomber/Spring Healed Jack/Vindictive Monty/Fearless Joe

Ch. Wychbury Kimbo/Ch. Widneyland Kim who doubled up on Brindle Mick via Ch. Gentleman Jim/Brindle Mick AND Ch. Brigand's Bo Sun/Brindle Bill/Brindle Mick on the bitches side of the pedigree.

Early 1950's

Nuncargate Nicky
(sire of Jolihem Adonis)

Mid 1950's

Jolihem Apollene  (dam of Jolihem Adonis) & Jolihem Apollo

Jo & Lionel Hemstock were great admirers of George Bass' Uddffa Staffords. George combined descendants of Fearless Joe through Vindictive Monty (including The Great Bomber) with those of Brindle Mick to produce Ch. Lady Cherie Of Uddffa (Grand-dam of Jolihem Apollo & Apollene).

Nuncargate Nicky
(sire of Jolihem Adonis)

1957

Jolihem Adonis (Sire of Ch. Jolihem Fine & Dandy and Jolihem Nuncargate Josie - Dreanought's Dam)

1961

Ch. Jolihem Fine & Dandy (sire: Jolihem Adonis)

Adonis was "M" line bred to Ch. Widneyland Kim (a son of Ch. Gentleman Jim) through his sire  Nuncargate Nicky who went back to Ch. Widneyland Kim through Ch. Wychbury Kimbo. Nuncargate Nicky was also the Grand Sire of Ch. Jolihem Forclip Christy Bella . Nuncargate Nicky also went back to The Great Bomber, who was himself a descendent of Vindictive Monty.

From selective breeding, the same "M" line stock was used  to produce both Brindle & Red Champions. Christy Bella's grandsires were Ch. Goldwyn Leading Lad (the first Champion in our "Unbroken Line") and Nuncargate Nicky (associated with our Unbroken Line through Adonis & Dreadnought).
Ch. Jolihem Forclip Christy Bella was mated to Ch. The Black Monarch to produce Jolihem Isabella: Dam of Ch. Jolihem Black Beauty. and Ch. Jubilent of Jolihem

1964

Ch. Jolihem Black Beauty

(sire: Ch. Jolihem El Toro , Dam: Jolihem Isabella).

Ch. Jubilent of Jolihem

(sire: Ch. Jolihem El Toro , Dam: Jolihem Isabella) (Owners: A & G Goddard
).

1959

Ch. Jolihem Forclip Christy Bella
(Sire: Ch. Goldwyn Lucky Lad (Brindle & White). Distant descendants of Christy & Ch. J. El Toro, include Ch. Black Tuscar.

We are now going to examine the lines of decent from Brindle Mick, paying particular attention to the the "top line" of the pedigree, i.e. the unbroken lines of Champion sires. The numbers in the text & [num] represent the number of Champions in the line of decent.

The Unbroken line of Champion sires:

Ch. Goldwyn's Leading Lad:
Sire: Wheatly Lad
Dam: Brindle Dianna
Brindle Mick was sire of Wheatly Lad & Grandsire of Brindle Dianna.
As far as I know, Wheatly Lad's only line of decent is through Leading Lad.
Vindictive Month appears twice in the 4th generation of Leading Lads pedigree.

1948
[1]

Ch. Goldwyn's Leading Lad (Owner/Br: Jack Altoft)(sire of Ch. Goldwyn Lucky Lad, who sired Ch. Jolihem Forclip Christy Bella (see above) and sire of Ch. Eastaff Danom.

Brindle Mick was the sire of the first Champion of the Breed: Ch. Gentleman Jim. He also sired Wheatly Lad, Brindle Bill & Furnace Jake amongst others.
Brindle Mick's Grandsire was Fearless Joe. Fearless Joe sired few litters (to Queenie, Quick The Devil, Uffmor Nell & Silver's Queenie). He was killed badger baiting as a young dog, he was red/fawn & white & widely thought to be one of the best examples of the breed at that time. His colouring was similar to Danom, Dreadnought & Ringmaster (see below) and has been brought out consistently throughout the generations.

Almost all the breeds Champions prior to the late 1950's were either directly from Brindle Mick, Vindictive Monty, or Ch. Wychbury Kimbo or were combinations of two of these lines of decent. Examples: Ch. Midnight Gift (1939) goes back to Vindictive Monty; Ch. Perfect Lady (1944) was sired by Furnace Jake, who's sire was Brindle Mick; Ch. Widneyland Model, Ch. Weycombe Dandy (1956), Ch. Sahib Of Senkrah (1958) go back to Brindle Mick; Ch. Our Queenie (1944), Felicitas of Nunholme (1946) (dam of Ch. Lady Cherie of Uddffa), Alan's Dynamo (1945) (sire of Ch. Ch. Lady Cherie of Uddffa), Widneyland Ritver Ringleader (1946) & Ch. Chestonian Satan's Firework (1954) combined Brindle Mick with The Great Bomber; Ch. Little Brindle Queen (1950), Ch. Wychbury Red Riband (1954) Ch. Weycome Melody Of Senkrah (1956), Ch. Relim A Boy (1957) &  Ch. Towans Merry Maid (1958) combined Ch. Wychbury Kimbo with Brindle Mick.

The above list is by no means exhaustive, but gives examples of both red/fawn & brindle Champions derived from the similar lines of decent.

Ch. Eastaff Danom (sire of many Champions including Ch. Jolihem Dreadnought ) (sire: Ch. Goldwyn's Leading Lad, Dam: Ch. Linda of Killyglen) (Half Brother to Ch. Goldwyn Lucky Lad - used to produce Ch. Jolihem Forclip Christy Bella)

1955
[2]

Ch. Eastaff Danom was a great dog and sired many Champions. Now his only line of decent to today's top winners is either directly through Ch. Jolihem Dreadnought & Ch. Jolihem Ringmaster, or through Ch. Sahib of Senkrah in combination with Dreadnought & Ringmaster. As breeders we should always be aware of the narrowing of the gene pool within our breed.

1964
[3]

Ch. Jolihem Dreadnought
(Sire: Ch. Eastaff Danom, Dam: Jolihem Nuncargate Josie, Grand Sire: Jolihem Adonis)

Dreadnought combined all 3 of the lines of decent from Fearless Joe (listed above): Brindle Mick (Brindle Bill & Ch. Gentleman Jim) through Ch. Eastaff Danom, Nuncargate Nicky & Nuncargate Lad  with lines of decent from Vindictive Monty (through The Great Bomber, via Uddfa and J. Adonis) with lines to Ch. Wychbury Kimbo & Ch. Widneyland Kim via J. Addonis/Nuncargate Nicky & Nuncargate Ladslove. The combination of all three lines of decent (Brindle Mick, The Great Bomber/Vindictive Monty & Ch. Wychbury Kimbo/ Ch. Widneyland Kim) certainly proved to be a lasting one.

[3]
Ch. Jolihem Dreadnought (Sire: Ch. Eastaff Danom, Dam: Jolihem Nuncargate Josie, Grand Sire: Jolihem Adonis)

Dreadnought sired several Champions including Ch. Pitbull Jef's Pal (a sire of Champion bitch line, not examined here), Ch. Rapparee Roulette and litter brother and sister Ch. Jolihem Ringmaster and Ch. Jolihem Gallent Bess .

1968
[4]
Ch. Jolihem Ringmaster (sire: Ch. Jolihem Dreadnought) (Doubled up on Ch. Eastaff Danom & Ch. Goldwyn's Leading Lad on 4th generation of pedigree via Grandsire on Bitches side: Dennybeck Hard Diamond
)

1968

In my own breeding programme I intend to stick closely to the lines of decent favored by my parents (see above). Obviously, a good temperament is the most important factor when selecting dogs/bitches to breed from, that said, in choosing a stud dog I tend to put more emphasis on pedigree than looks or colour, and I also trace my chosen stud's pedigree right back to where records began.  I put emphasis on pedigree & lines because breeding closely related stock increases the chance that identical hereditary units from a common ancestor will be passed from one generation to the next. In my Dad's words - "You can't mate two cart horses and expect to get a thoroughbred!" Through inbreeding and close breeding a desirable recessive trait is more likely to be expressed since a recessive gene can be masked by a dominant gene in a heterozygous population. This is why linebreeding (a less intense form of close breeding) increases the chance of having homozygous offspring and fixes desirable breed traits that have been selected for. To all intents and purposes, inbreeding does not create undesirable traits, but it can increase the expression of those which are already in the heterozygous population. Also, do not be afraid to mate dogs of different colour, we are loosing a lot of the breeds diversity of colours in the show ring. If you trace pedigrees back far enough you will find many common ancestors between reds & brindles (see Family Line, above). My latest litter combined Ch. Nordic Chief (red/fawn & white) & Ch. Domino Flashy Lad (white with brindle markings). Mating Maktoum image of Jolihem (red) with Ch. Domino Flashy Lad produced some "old fashioned" colours 2 red/fawn & white, 1 mahogany brindle & white & 1 tiger brindle & white (see below).
